Visibility of Old Supernova Remnants in Hi 21 - cm
We estimate the number of old, radiative supernova remnants (SNRs) detectable in Hi 21-cm emission line in the Galaxy. We assume that old SNRs consist of expanding Hi shells and that they are visible if the line-of-sight velocities are sufficiently outside the velocity range of the Galactic background Hi emission. This criterion of visibility makes it possible to calculate the background contam...
متن کاملThe distances of supernova remnants Kes 69 and G 21 . 5 − 0 . 9 from H I and 13 CO spectra
We obtain new H I and 13CO images around supernova remnants Kes 69 and G21.5−0.9. By comparing H I spectra with 13CO emission spectra, we significantly revise the kinematic distance for Kes 69 to ∼5.5 kpc, which was 11.2 kpc, and refine the kinematic distance for G21.5−0.9 to ∼4.8 kpc. For Kes 69, the highest velocity of absorption is ∼86 km s−1 and a prominent H I emission feature at ∼112 km s...
متن کاملShell-type Supernova Remnants
The role of Supernova Remnants (SNRs) for the production of the Galactic Cosmic Rays is reviewed from the point of view of theory and very high energy gamma-ray experiments. The point is made that theory can describe young SNRs very well, if the evidence from the synchrotron emission is used to empirically determine several parameters of the theory, and thus theory can predict the relative cont...
متن کاملSupernova Remnants and GLAST
It has long been speculated that supernova remnants represent a major source of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Observations over the past decade have ceremoniously unveiled direct evidence of particle acceleration in SNRs to energies approaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum. Nonthermal X-ray emission from shell-type SNRs reveals multi-TeV electrons, and the dynamical properties of several SN...
متن کاملNeutron Stars in Supernova Remnants
In the following, we shall briefly summarize some facts and ideas concerning the presence of neutron stars in Supernova remnants. While sources similar to the Crab Nebula require the presence of a central energetic object, shell-type remnants such as Cas A are compatible with the presence of neutron stars releasing a weak relativistic wind. Supernova remnants are usually classified into two ext...
